The College of Life Science and Technology,HUST was founded in 1980 from the Biomechanics Research Group of Huazhong Institute of Technology the predecessor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Over the past 40 years, it has forged ahead with resolve and tenacity. The college focuses on the forefront of global technology and the world economy and is committed to addressing the country's major needs and improving people's health. Adhering to the development philosophy of interdisciplinary integration of science, engineering, and medicine, it has made constant progress towards the goal of building a world-class discipline of life science.
In 1980, the Department of Biomechanics Teaching and Research was established.
In 1981, the enrollment of master's and undergraduate students in Biomedical Engineering began.
In 1983, the discipline of Biomedical Engineering was authorized to offer the doctorate degree.
In 1987, the enrollment of undergraduate students in Biotechnology began.
In 1999, the College of Life Science and Technology was established; the Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professorship (the highest honorary professorship in China) in Biomedical Photonics was approved for establishment.
In 2000, the Key Laboratory of Biomedical Photonics was approved by the Ministry of Education; the Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professorship in Biomedical Engineering was approved for establishment; the discipline of Biophysics was authorized to offer the doctorate degree.
In 2001, postdoctoral mobile stations in Biomedical Engineering and Biology were approved for establishment.
In 2002, the National Talent Training Base for Life Science and Technology (Bioinformatics Undergraduate Program) was approved.
In 2003, the College of Life Science and Technology moved to East Building 11.
In 2005, “Chinese Digital Human Male No. 1” was recognized as one of the “Top Ten Scientific Advances in China”; the establishment of the Biomedical Photonics Research Division of Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics was initiated; the Key Laboratory of Bioinformatics and Molecular Imaging in Hubei Province was approved; the first-level discipline of Biology were authorized to offer the doctorate degree.
In 2006, the Innovation Team was approved by the Ministry of Education; the enrollment of undergraduate students in Biological Sciences began.
In 2007, Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics were included in the list of National Key Disciplines; the Key Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics was approved by the Ministry of Education.
In 2008, the Innovation Center for the Higher Education Institution Academic Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Plan was approved; National Base of Natural Sciences for Training Basic Science Research and Teaching Personnel (Biological Sciences Program) was approved; the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award was won.
In 2009, the second Innovation Team was approved by the Ministry of Education; the National Engineering Research Center for Nanomedicine was approved.
In 2010, the "Specialized Teaching Team of Biotechnology" was recognized as a National Teaching Team.
In 2011, the Innovation Group was approved by the National Natural Science Foundation of China; “Micro-Optical Sectioning Tomography to Obtain a High-Resolution Atlas of the Mouse Brain” was recognized as one of the “Top Ten Scientific Advances in China”; Biomedical Engineering was selected for the Outstanding Engineer Education and Training Program; the enrollment of undergraduate students in Biopharmaceuticals began.
In 2014, the Second Prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award was won; the Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award was won; the Key Areas Innovation Team was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology; the National Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching Center was approved.
In 2017, in the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, the discipline of Biomedical Engineering received an A+ and Biology was graded at A-; Professor Yu Longjiang was recognized as an outstanding teacher of national “Ten Thousand Talents Scheme”.
In 2018, the Benchmark Department for Party Building in National Universities was approved; the Education Ministry's Top Ten Typical Cases for Targeted Poverty Alleviation were awarded; the “Party Building + Targeted Poverty Alleviation” project was recognized as the Most Influential Social Practice Project in China.
In 2019, “China's Independently Developed All-digital PET/CT Equipment Entered the Market” was recognized as one of the “Top Ten Scientific Advances in China”; Professor Luo Qingming was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; the Innovation Center was rated excellent and received funding 2.0; four programs were recognized as National First-class Undergraduate Programs.
In 2020, the second Key Areas Innovation Team was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology; 11 disciplines of the university were supported to enter the top 1% of ESI; doctoral student Zhang Bo was honored as Positive and Kind Youth for exuding positive youthful energy; the college was selected as one of the first batch of Pilot Bases for the Plan for Strengthening basic Academic Disciplines and was approved as one of the first batch of Top-notch Student Training Programs 2.0 in Basic Disciplines.
In 2021, the "Hundred Model Party Branches for Graduate Students" was approved in national universities; the Chinese-Foreign cooperatively-run educational projects in Biological Sciences was approved by the Ministry of Education; the Ministry of Science and Technology sent a thank-you letter to the college for its scientific research work in responding to the pandemic.
In 2022, the Research Base of Regulatory Science for Medical Devices was approved by the National Medical Products Administration; the Second Prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award was won again.
