The College of Life Science and Technology at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) traces its roots back to the Biomechanics Teaching and Research Section of Huazhong Institute of Technology in 1980. Upholding the spirit of "Daring to Compete, Good at Transformation" of HUST, the school adheres to the development concept of interdisciplinary integration of science, engineering, and medicine. Over the years, it has grown from nothing to excellence, achieving the status of one of the first batch of national model Party-building units and receiving an A+ rating for Biomedical Engineering and an A- for Biology in the fourth round of national discipline evaluations. The school has thus embarked on a distinctive path of interdisciplinary development in life sciences with "HUST characteristics."
The college currently comprises five departments: Biomedical Engineering, Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, and Nano-medicine and Biopharmaceuticals. It hosts two national first-level disciplines in Biomedical Engineering and Biology, and one national virtual simulation experimental teaching center. The faculty consists of 189 members, including 85 professors and 53 associate professors. Among the faculty, there is a significant number of distinguished talents, including three Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, three Changjiang Scholars, eight recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, three National High-level Talent Plan selectees, seven recipients of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Plan," and 28 recipients of the National High-level Youth Talent Plan. The school has been awarded one national teaching team, one National Natural Science Foundation innovation group, two Ministry of Science and Technology key field innovation teams, and two Ministry of Education innovation teams.
In recent years, the school has undertaken and completed numerous national research projects and technological development projects, with annual research funding steadily increasing. It has established 10 national research platforms, including the Biomedical Photonics Research Division of the Wuhan National Research Center for Optoelectronics, the National Engineering Research Center for Nano-medicine, the Key Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics of the Ministry of Education, and the National Research Center for Medical Device Regulatory Science, as well as three international research cooperation platforms. The school has received numerous accolades, including three awards for major scientific and technological advances in China, 13 national and provincial science and technology awards, and published over 80 papers in prestigious journals such as Cell, Nature, Science, and their sub-journals. Additionally, the school has obtained more than 200 patents, both international and domestic.
We emphasizes a unique training approach that focuses on "Humanities, Solid Foundation, Strong Practice, Interdisciplinary Integration, and Promoting Exchange." It has established eight national talent training experimental demonstration bases and four national first-class undergraduate program construction points. In 2020, it was selected as a base for the Ministry of Education's Top-notch Student Training Program in Basic Disciplines 2.0, the Strong Foundation Plan, and the Talent Plan. In 2022, it was approved as a pilot unit for the Ministry of Education's first batch of virtual teaching and research projects. The school offers five undergraduate programs aligned with cutting-edge research in life sciences and major national strategic needs, and it has established doctoral and master's programs in two first-level disciplines: Biomedical Engineering and Biology, as well as professional degree programs in Biology and Medicine, and Electronic Information. It also has two first-level postdoctoral research stations.
We places great importance on international exchange and has conducted extensive and substantive scientific research cooperation and talent training with renowned universities and research institutions both domestically and internationally, such as Paris-Saclay University and the University of Toronto. It has successfully hosted a series of high-level academic conferences. In 2021, it launched a collaborative undergraduate education program in Biological Sciences with Paris-Saclay University, becoming the university's first undergraduate Sino-foreign cooperative education program.
All faculty and staff of the college will continue to uphold the school motto of "Integrity, Profound Learning, Truth-seeking, Innovation," and the LIFE culture of "Leading, International, Focusing, Endeavoring." They will work diligently and practically, striving to make breakthroughs and achieve excellence in building a world-class life sciences discipline.
