The Department of Biomedical Engineering, with a legacy spanning over 40 years, stands as one of the most distinguished and long-established departments in the college. Since enrolling its first undergraduate students in 1981, the department quickly expanded its academic offerings, establishing one of the university’s earliest doctoral programs by 1984. Recognized as a national key first-level discipline, Biomedical Engineering was awarded an A+ rating in the Ministry of Education's 4th discipline evaluations.

The department prides itself on a world-class faculty comprising 64 members, including 36 Professors and 21 Associate Professors, among which there are an  academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 5 national high-level talents, 3 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 4 National High-level Young Talents, and one National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholar. These esteemed faculty members are at the forefront of groundbreaking research and innovation.

The undergraduate program in Biomedical Engineering was selected for the Ministry of Education’s Excellence Engineer Training Program in 2013 and was recognized as a national first-class undergraduate program in 2019. In recent years, students from the department have achieved numerous outstanding accomplishments and won honors, including National "Top 100" Excellent Doctoral Dissertations, gold medals in the "Internet +" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the National Youth Role Models for Virtue, a gold medal at the Geneva Invention Exhibition for undergraduates, and the Best Paper Award at SPIE Medical Imaging, among many others.
